We all know that road trips make for great adventures. However, if you don't plan them well they can quickly end in disaster. This post has tips for keeping your vehicle safe and your passengers sane.

Arrive Alive and in a Good Mood!

It doesn't matter if you are driving away for the weekend with your family, taking a week off work to explore with your partner, or simply heading to the beach for an overnight trip with a group of your friends; a road trip is an excellent way to see the sights and enjoy a budget friendly vacation. Of course, just like all vacations, road trips come with their own unique instances where a road trip full of good vibes can quickly turn bad. To help you prevent these during your next road trip, Jim Ackney is here with a post to help.

Start With Your Passengers

Road trips aren't a scenario where you just get in a car and everything will magically happen. Instead, they take a little planning. Consider these tips:
  • Whether it's a full night sleep before a morning drive or a power nap for a few hours to refresh your energy levels, be sure that you and your passengers are all well rested before the journey.
  • Plan out the route that you will be taking and look for places that are convenient to stop and swap drivers. Look for places where passengers (and yourself) can also use the bathroom, stretch their legs, and generally walk around for a minute or two.
  • If you are driving for an extended period, make sure that all passengers are aware that they need to bring their own snacks, as well as something for everybody to enjoy. This is a great way to ensure there is sufficient food and drink along the journey.
  • Just because you are used to watching Netflix all night long doesn't mean that you will want to do it while you drive. To keep the mood social, look for small travel games that everybody (well, not the driver!) can play as you drive.
  • For the driver, their entertainment comes in the form of music. Be sure that everybody has created a playlist before the drive, with the rule that whoever is driving gets to play the music. After all, what else will they do while everybody else plays games?!
As simple as they sound, these tips are commonly forgotten and can be the difference between arriving ready to continue enjoying a vacation, and arriving ready to scream! With your passengers taken care of, give some thought to your poor car. Just like you all need food and drink, so too does your car need sustenance. Finish With Your Vehicle

Now it's time to pay attention to your car. While you might not need a full mechanic service, here are some great basic items to check before you all pile in your vehicle:
  • The pressure in your tires can determine how well your car handles and how much gas you use as you drive. The morning of your departure, stop in at a gas station and make sure that your tires are at the recommended pressure.
  • While you are looking at your tires, check for any damage which could lead to a tire blowout as you drive. Even the smallest nick cut out from your tire by a rock can lead to a blowout at high speed.
  • Arguably the most important fluid inside your engine is going to be your engine oil. If this level is low, top it up! If the oil looks old, replace it! Whatever you choose to do, be sure that your car has a sufficient level of high-quality engine oil flowing through it.
  • Of course, you shouldn't neglect your other levels. Check your owner's manual for any specific items, however, the common ones to check will be:
    • Brake Fluid
    • Transmission Fluid
    • Water/Coolant tank
    • Power steering fluid
There is a multitude of safety features inside your car. Some you can see, and others you can't. Check the ones that you can see, such as your seatbelts, door locks, loose fittings, etc. If you can see a problem such as a frayed seatbelt, replace it before you leave.
